Guinea-Bissau
Guinea-Bissau is a small country in West Africa, bordered by Senegal to the north, Guinea to the south and east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Its capital is Bissau. The country has a population of about 1.9 million and covers approximately 36,125 square kilometers.
After a long fight for independence, Guinea-Bissau broke away from Portuguese rule in 1974. The population is ethnically diverse and speaks many local languages, with Portuguese as the official language. The economy, one of the world’s poorest, depends on agriculture, especially cashew nuts and fish, and is challenged by political instability and poverty.
Guinea-Bissau has a history of coups and instability, which has hampered its development and led to significant periods of unrest and poverty.
