Maldives

The Maldives is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, comprising approximately 1,192 coral islands grouped into 26 atolls. Its capital and most populous city is Malé. The country’s population is about half a million people, and Islam is the state religion.

With an average ground level of 1.5 meters above sea level, the Maldives is the lowest country on Earth and is at significant risk from rising sea levels and climate change. The Maldives’ history includes settlement by people from South Asia, adoption of Islam in the 12th century, a period as a sultanate, and British protectorate status before gaining independence in 1965 and becoming a republic in 1968.

The economy is reliant on tourism and fishing, with tourism now the largest sector and a major foreign exchange earner. The nation is noted for its luxury resorts, beautiful beaches, and remarkable marine biodiversity.
