Mongolia is a landlocked country in East Asia, bordered by Russia to the north and China to the south, east, and west. Ulaanbaatar is the capital and home to a substantial part of the 3.5 million-strong population. Mongolia spans over 1.56 million square kilometers, making it the 19th largest country in the world and one of the most sparsely populated.
The country is known for its vast, grassy steppes, mountain ranges, and the Gobi Desert. Most Mongolians are ethnic Mongols, and the official language is Mongolian. Mongolia has a rich nomadic tradition and a parliamentary republic government. The country’s history is marked by the Mongol Empire founded by Genghis Khan in the 13th century.
