Tajikistan
Tajikistan is a mountainous, landlocked country in Central Asia, bordered by Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China, and Afghanistan. It has a population of around 9–10 million, with the majority living in rural areas. The country became independent after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Tajikistan’s economy relies on aluminum production, cotton, and remittances from workers abroad, making it one of the poorest countries of the former Soviet republics. The terrain is 93% mountainous, including the Pamir range, and many areas are remote and difficult to access. The official language is Tajik.
