Turkmenistan
Turkmenistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia, bordered by Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Iran, and the Caspian Sea. The capital and largest city is Ashgabat. Turkmenistan covers about 491,210 square kilometers, making it the second largest state in Central Asia, and has a population estimated at 7.3 million.
Most inhabitants are ethnic Turkmen, and the official language is Turkmen. The country consists mainly of desert, chiefly the Karakum Desert, with the Amu Darya and Morghab as main rivers. Turkmenistan was part of the Soviet Union until 1991, after which it became independent and established an authoritarian government.
The country is rich in natural gas and petroleum resources, which drive its economy, while agriculture, particularly cotton production—remains important.
