Acrocorinth is a massive hilltop fortress that rises above the ancient city of Corinth in the Peloponnese and is considered one of the most important and impressive fortified sites in Greece.

Its commanding position overlooking the Isthmus of Corinth made it a key military stronghold for more than two thousand years, controlling the main land route between mainland Greece and the Peloponnese. The site was occupied and fortified from ancient Greek times through the Byzantine, Frankish, Venetian, and Ottoman periods.

Its defenses were continuously expanded, resulting in extensive walls, gates, towers, and other fortifications that reflect many layers of history. At its summit once stood a famous Temple of Aphrodite, while a reliable natural spring within the fortress helped sustain defenders during long sieges. The stronghold played a crucial role in numerous conflicts and was often regarded as one of the keys to controlling southern Greece.

Today, Acrocorinth is one of Greece’s most significant archaeological and medieval sites, attracting visitors with its well-preserved fortifications, rich history, and spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and coastline.
