Acropolis Walls
Thessaloniki, Greece, Greece
The Acropolis Walls of Thessaloniki are part of the city’s impressive ancient fortification system, which was developed mainly during the late Roman and Byzantine periods to protect one of the most important cities of the Eastern Mediterranean.
Built and strengthened between the 4th and 5th centuries AD, the walls enclosed the upper city and connected to the Acropolis and the fortress of Heptapyrgion, forming a powerful defensive network. Stretching for several kilometers and reinforced with towers, gates, and bastions, the walls helped Thessaloniki withstand numerous invasions and sieges over many centuries.
Their elevated position also provided excellent views and strategic control over the surrounding region. Today, large sections of the walls remain remarkably well preserved and are among Thessaloniki’s most important historical landmarks. As part of the city’s UNESCO-listed Byzantine monuments, they offer visitors a striking glimpse into Thessaloniki’s rich military, architectural, and cultural heritage.
