Agia Mavra Fortress, also known as the Castle of Santa Maura, is a large medieval fortress located at the entrance to the island of Lefkada in the Ionian Sea.

Built around 1300, it occupied a strategic position controlling access to the island, the Ambracian Gulf, and important sea routes in western Greece. Originally established by Frankish rulers, the fortress was later expanded and strengthened by the Ottomans and Venetians, who adapted it to changing military technologies.

Over the centuries, it served as both a fortified town and a major defensive stronghold, passing through the hands of several powers including the Ottomans, Venetians, French, British, and eventually Greece. Today, Agia Mavra Fortress is one of Lefkada’s most important historical landmarks.
