Ainay-le-Vieil
France, France
Ainay-le-Vieil is a small village in the Cher department of central France, best known for the remarkable Château d’Ainay-le-Vieil.
Often called “Little Carcassonne” because of its circular fortified walls and towers, the castle is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in France and has stood on a strategically important site since the Middle Ages. The château combines medieval defensive architecture with elegant Renaissance features and has remained in the hands of the same family since the 15th century.
Its history is linked to notable French figures, including Jacques Cœur and descendants of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, a minister of Louis XIV. Ainay-le-Vieil is also celebrated for its beautiful gardens, which include a rose garden, landscaped park, canals, and a series of enclosed themed gardens known as chartreuses. These gardens create a striking contrast with the fortress-like appearance of the castle.
