Airvault is a historic town in the Deux-Sèvres department of western France, situated along the River Thouet. With a population of about 3,300, it is known for its rich medieval heritage and has been recognized as a “Petite Cité de Caractère” for its well-preserved historic center. The town's most notable landmark is the Saint-Pierre Abbey and church, whose origins date back to around the 10th century. Airvault was an important stop on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, and visitors can still explore its abbey buildings, medieval streets, ancient bridges, and a unique underground fountain. Overlooking the town is the Château d’Airvault, a medieval castle whose surviving fortifications reflect the area's strategic importance during the Middle Ages. The castle and surrounding historic monuments contribute greatly to Airvault’s cultural identity. Today, Airvault combines historical charm with a lively local culture, offering museums, markets, festivals, and heritage sites that make it one of the most attractive small towns in the region.
