AlAzraq Castle
Jordan, Jordan
Al-Azraq Castle, also known as Qasr al-Azraq or the “Blue Fortress,” is a historic desert fortress located near the town of Azraq in eastern Jordan. Built primarily from dark volcanic basalt stone, the castle occupies a strategic position beside the Azraq Oasis, which was once the only reliable water source across a vast desert region. The site was first used by the Romans and was later expanded and rebuilt by successive civilizations, including the Ayyubids in the 13th century. The fortress is best known internationally for its connection to T. E. Lawrence, better known as “Lawrence of Arabia,” who used it as a base during the Arab Revolt of 1917–1918. Today, visitors can explore its massive stone gates, towers, courtyard, mosque, and historic chambers while learning about its long military and cultural history.
