Altena Castle
Altena, Germany, Belgium
Altena Castle, located in Altena, Germany, was built in the early 12th century by the brothers Adolf and Everhard von Berg after receiving land from Emperor Henry V.
Originally known as Wulfeshagen, the castle was constructed to protect the region’s iron trade. Over the centuries, it served as the residence of the County of Mark, and later became a military garrison, prison, and hospital. The castle burned down in 1455 and was only partially rebuilt. By the 19th century, it deteriorated significantly until reconstruction efforts began in 1909, restoring it to a medieval appearance.
Altena Castle is historically significant as the site of the world’s first youth hostel, founded in 1914, and today it houses museums dedicated to the County of Mark and the youth hostel movement. The castle remains a prominent landmark, showcasing medieval architecture and the rich cultural heritage of the region.
