Amphlett-Inseln
Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea
Amphlett‑Inseln, also known as the Amphlett Islands, is a small volcanic island group in the Solomon Sea, located in Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea, about 10 km north of Fergusson Island and part of the wider D’Entrecasteaux chain.
The group comprises around 18 islands and islets spread in a loose ring‑shaped pattern, with low‑lying shores, scattered reefs, and dense coastal vegetation. The islands are occupied by small Melanesian communities known for their traditional pottery, which remains a key cash‑earning craft, and they participate in the famous kula exchange network that links many island societies in Milne Bay.
Access is usually by boat from nearby villages such as Salamo, and the area is far more oriented toward local subsistence and cultural life than mass tourism, lying in relatively remote waters used mainly by regional fishing and trading vessels.
