The Ancient Agora of Athens was the central marketplace and gathering place in ancient Athens, serving as the social, political, commercial, administrative, and cultural heart of the city.

Developed initially in the 6th century BCE, it became a vibrant hub where Athenian citizens conducted business, met for political discussions, and took part in democratic governance. It housed important structures like stoas (covered walkways), temples including the well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus, and government buildings where the city council and law courts convened.

The Agora was also a place where famous philosophers such as Socrates debated and taught, making it a symbol of civic freedom, justice, and public life in classical Athens. Despite many destructions over time, it was continually rebuilt and remains a significant archaeological site reflecting Athens' rich history and democratic legacy. Today, the site is a peaceful green space with ruins that offer insight into the daily and political life of ancient Athens.
