Angelokastro, meaning “Castle of the Angel,” is a remarkable Byzantine fortress perched on a steep cliff on the northwest coast of Corfu.

Built in the medieval period on a highly strategic site about 305 meters above the sea, it was one of the island’s most important defensive strongholds and offered extensive views across the Ionian Sea and surrounding countryside. The castle formed part of Corfu’s defensive network and played a crucial role in protecting the island from pirate raids and foreign invasions.

Despite numerous attacks, including several Ottoman sieges, Angelokastro was never successfully captured, making it a symbol of the island’s resilience and military strength. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of its walls, gates, and chapels while enjoying spectacular panoramic views of Corfu’s coastline. The site remains one of the island’s most impressive historical landmarks and an outstanding example of Byzantine military architecture.
