Anglo-Boer War Blockhouse | Witkop
South Africa , South Africa
The Anglo-Boer War blockhouse at Witkop, near Vereeniging in Gauteng, is a small two-storey stone fortification built by the British around 1900–1901 to protect a nearby railway line and control Boer guerrilla movements during the later stages of the Second Anglo-Boer War.
Designed with thick masonry walls and rifle loopholes, it housed a small garrison who could watch over the surrounding veld and defend the line; although it saw little direct fighting, it formed part of a wider network of blockhouses and barbed-wire fences that helped the British restrict Boer mobility and hasten the end of the war.
Most such blockhouses were later dismantled, but Witkop survived and was declared a National Monument in 1948; today it is a provincial heritage site and one of the best-preserved examples in South Africa, though reports note ongoing problems with vandalism and a lack of active on-site management.
