The Archives Tower (Tour des Archives) is the impressive keep of a medieval castle in Vernon, Normandy.
Built in 1123 by King Henry I of England, the son of William the Conqueror, it is one of the rare surviving round keeps in the region and stands about 22 meters high. The tower was originally part of a larger fortress that played an important role in defending the area during conflicts between England and France.
After King Philip II of France captured Vernon in 1196, the castle was strengthened as part of a wider defensive system along the Seine. Although most of the castle has disappeared, the Archives Tower remains a prominent landmark and a protected historic monument. Its current name comes from its later use as a storage place for municipal archives, and today it stands as one of Vernon’s most recognizable reminders of its medieval past.
