Arta Castle
Arta, Greece, Greece
Arta Castle is a well-preserved medieval fortress located on a hill in the city of Arta in northwestern Greece.
Built on the site of the ancient city of Ambracia, the castle occupies a strategically important position near the Arachthos River and has served as a defensive stronghold since Byzantine times. The fortress gained particular importance in the 13th century when Arta became the capital of the Despotate of Epirus, a Byzantine successor state.
Its walls, towers, and fortifications were expanded during this period, making it one of the region’s most significant political and military centers. Over the centuries, the castle passed through the hands of Byzantines, Serbs, Albanians, Ottomans, and other rulers, each contributing to its development. Today, it remains one of Arta’s most important landmarks, offering visitors a glimpse into the city’s rich Byzantine and medieval heritage.
