Atalaia's castle
Atalaia, Portugal, Portugal
Atalaia's Castle, or Castelo da Atalaia, is a ruined medieval fortress atop a hill in Atalaia near Vila Nova da Barquinha, Santarém district, central Portugal.
Likely originating as a Lusitanian castro from the early Metal Ages, captured and Romanized around 100 BCE as a military base, it passed through Alans, Visigoths, and Muslims before Portuguese control by 1129.
Conquered definitively by Afonso Henriques in 1147 who ordered rebuilding, it received a foral charter from Afonso II in 1212 and further reconstruction with a menagem tower under Dinis around 1315, serving Tagus frontier defense.
Now overgrown and nearly vanished, its remnants evoke layered prehistoric to medieval history amid regional Roman traces.
