The Australian Wildlife Sanctuary, located at 3105 Remembrance Driveway in Bargo, New South Wales, is a heritage-listed 90-hectare wildlife refuge on Tharawal Country that serves as a home to rescued, non-releasable, and threatened native Australian species.
Established in 1962 by conservationist and educator Dr. Thistle Stead AM in memory of her husband, noted marine biologist and pioneer conservationist David George Stead, the sanctuary was gifted to the National Trust (NSW) in 1965 and has been managed by the Australian Wildlife Sanctuary since 2019 with support from dedicated volunteers.
Visitors can meet iconic Aussie animals including emus, wombats, snakes, lizards, bare-nosed wombats, long-neck turtles, wallabies, and more through interactive "Wild Encounter" experiences where they can cuddle and feed the resident animals, or enjoy a full private tour of the sanctuary.
The facility includes a café, gift shop, and education centre, offers exclusive educational wildlife experiences, and is just a short drive from Sydney on the doorstep to the Southern Highlands of NSW, making it an accessible charity destination for wildlife lovers.
