Belém Tower
Lisbon, Portugal, Portugal
Belém Tower is a 16th-century fortified tower on the Tagus River's northern bank in Lisbon's Belém district, Portugal, built between 1514 and 1520 under King Manuel I to defend the harbor entrance during Portugal's Age of Discoveries.
Designed by military architect Francisco de Arruda in the ornate Manueline style blending Gothic, Renaissance, and Moorish elements, its beige lioz limestone structure features a four-story hexagonal tower rising from a square bastion armed with cannons, intricate maritime carvings like twisted ropes and armillary spheres symbolizing exploration, a loggia balcony for ceremonies, and rhinoceros motifs honoring Vasco da Gama's voyages.
Originally a customs post, lighthouse, and prison, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 alongside Jerónimos Monastery, now drawing visitors via boat for panoramic river views and exhibits on its naval legacy.
