Belfort van Gent
Belgium, Belgium
Belfort van Gent, or the Belfry of Ghent, is a striking 91‑meter‑tall medieval tower in the heart of Ghent, Belgium, forming one of the city’s three famous towers alongside St. Bavo’s Cathedral and St. Nicholas’ Church.
Construction began in 1313 and was completed around 1380, and for centuries the tower served as both a bell tower to mark time and warn of danger and as a fortified watchtower that safeguarded the city’s charters and civic privileges.
Today the Belfort symbolizes Ghent’s historical prosperity and independence, with a golden dragon on its spire watching over the old town and a carillon of bells still playing regularly in the belfry. The tower is part of the UNESCO World Heritage‑listed Belfries of Belgium and France, and visitors can climb its 386 steps to the top for panoramic views of Ghent’s skyline and the surrounding district.
