Belsunce is a historically rich district in the heart of Marseille, named after Bishop Henri François Xavier de Belsunce-Castelmoron, who gained fame for his compassion during the Great Plague of Marseille in 1720.

The area originated around a Franciscan convent dating back to 1215 and developed through the 17th century as a promenade and market area for the Marseille nobility, eventually becoming more popular with diverse social groups.

Over the 20th century, Belsunce emerged as a multicultural hub due to waves of immigration from Spain, Armenia, North Africa, and Asia, reflected today in its vibrant markets and ethnic businesses, especially along Rue Longue des Capucins.

The district features notable landmarks including the Alcazar Library, the archaeological Jardin des Vestiges, and the dramatic Porte d’Aix triumphal arch. Belsunce balances a rich historical heritage with a lively, diverse cultural atmosphere, playing a key role in Marseille's urban and social life.
