Blue Mountains Botanic Garden Mount Tomah
Mount Tomah, Australia, Australia
Blue Mountains Botanic Garden Mount Tomah is a 28-hectare public botanic garden located at Mount Tomah in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, approximately 100 kilometers west of Sydney, and is the highest botanic garden in the southern hemisphere at 1,000 meters above sea level.
It is the only botanic garden in Australia located within a UNESCO World Heritage Area—the Greater Blue Mountains Area—and specializes in cool-climate plants from around the world and the southern hemisphere that would not grow well in Sydney's warmer conditions. The garden features more than 40,000 native, exotic, and rare plants including the rare Wollemi pine, camellias (some extinct in the wild), basalt cap forests, remnant rainforest, and alpine rainforest, creating spectacular seasonal colour.
Established in 1972 and heritage-listed on the New South Wales Heritage Register, the garden includes an additional 128 hectares of land dedicated to conservation and is managed by the Botanic Gardens Trust, which also oversees the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney. Entry to the garden is free, and it is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm and Saturday to Sunday from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm plus public holidays.
Visitors can enjoy pathways designed for wandering, a visitor centre, accessible amenities, a cafe, picnic areas with BBQs, free guided tours, conferencing facilities, workshops, events, car parking, coach parking, lookouts with panoramic mountain views over the mountains to the west, and a gift shop. The garden is just 90 minutes from Sydney and can be accessed via Bells Line of Road through Bilpin, making it a perfect destination for peaceful walks in crisp mountain air surrounded by UNESCO World Heritage wilderness.
