Bourtzi Castle
Greece, Greece
Bourtzi Castle is a small Venetian sea fortress located on a tiny islet in the middle of Nafplio’s harbor in the Peloponnese.
Built in 1473 by the Venetians, it was designed to protect the harbor entrance from enemy ships and pirates, and a heavy chain could be stretched between the fortress and the mainland to block access to the port. Over the centuries, the castle passed between Venetian and Ottoman control and played an important role during the Greek War of Independence.
It later served various purposes, including as a residence for executioners and even as a hotel during the 20th century. Today, Bourtzi is one of Nafplio’s most iconic landmarks and a popular tourist attraction. Accessible by boat, it offers visitors a chance to explore its historic fortifications while enjoying beautiful views of the harbor, the town, and the surrounding coastline.
