Brest, France, is a key port city located in the Finistère department of the Brittany region, known for its strategic military and naval importance since the Middle Ages.

Its name may stem from an old Celtic word meaning "hill." First recorded around 1240, Brest was controlled by the English from 1342 to 1397 and later became part of the French kingdom in 1491.

Cardinal Richelieu recognized its value as a naval base in 1631, establishing a harbor that was expanded and fortified by Jean-Baptiste Colbert and the famed engineer Vauban in the late 17th century. Brest played a crucial role as a naval and transatlantic port during both World Wars, serving as a debarkation point for American troops and a base for German U-boats during WWII.
