Briançon, France, is a historic town in the French Alps known for its strategic location at the confluence of five valleys near the Italian border.

With origins dating back to Roman times when it was called Brigantium, Briançon developed as a fortified settlement in the Middle Ages to defend against invasions. Its most prominent feature is the Vauban fortifications, constructed in the late 17th century by the military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban on the orders of Louis XIV to strengthen France's Alpine defenses against the Dukes of Savoy.

The fortified town includes thick walls, bastions, gates, and forts like Fort des Trois Têtes and Fort du Randouillet, making Briançon one of France's most impregnable mountain strongholds. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Briançon’s old town is notable for colorful facades, sundials, fountains, and narrow cobbled streets.
