Burg Stockem
Eupen, Belgium, Belgium
Burg Stockem is a historic castle in the village of Stockem, part of the town of Eupen in the German‑speaking community of eastern Belgium, situated on Stockem road near the chapel of St. Michael and now used as office space for the local administration.
A lord of Stockem is documented as early as 1172, and the castle or seigneury of Stockem and Eupen is first mentioned in writing in the mid‑14th century as the seat of the lordship; the original medieval stronghold fell into ruins around 1600, and the present buildings mainly date from the 18th and 19th centuries, with a surviving 1502 bergfried (a former residential tower set in a moat) and an 1778 gatehouse with flanking round towers and a residential wing between them commissioned by Peter Vercken.
