Calhau de São Jorge
Portugal, Portugal
Calhau de São Jorge is a scenic coastal location on Madeira Island's north coast, situated in the municipality of Santana within the parish of São Jorge, at the mouth of São Jorge Creek.
The name "Calhau" means "pebble" in Portuguese, referring to the stony beach full of boulders that characterizes this area. This historic site contains the primitive nucleus of São Jorge parish, featuring ruins of ancient 16th-century sugarcane mills (engenhos de cana-de-açúcar) that date back to the early days of territorial settlement and operated between the 16th and 20th centuries.
Since 2003, this primitive core has been designated as a Monument of Municipal Interest, with the entrance portal being one of the most significant remaining structures from the old colonial era. The location also features the Calhau de São Jorge Bathing Complex, a modern swimming pool complex with natural seawater pools fed by the creek, offering a safe swimming area adjacent to the small beach where visitors can relax and enjoy the natural beauty of Madeira's north coast.
The area is popular with locals during summer months due to the restaurant and pools, while hikers visit year-round to walk the scenic Vereda do Calhau trail lined with cactus and flowering plants that winds up the mountainside. The beach itself is considered somewhat dangerous for swimming due to large swells, so the engineered pools provide a safer alternative for enjoying the Atlantic waters.
