The Cango Caves, located near Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape of South Africa, are a famous system of limestone caves nestled in the Swartberg Mountains. Formed over millions of years by underground water dissolving limestone rock, the caves feature extensive tunnels and chambers adorned with spectacular stalactites and stalagmites.

Discovered in modern times in 1780 by farmer Jacobus van Zyl, these caves have been inhabited since the Early Stone Age, with evidence suggesting that Khoekhoe and San people used the area as shelter thousands of years ago. The caves, stretching over 4 to 5 kilometers with around a quarter accessible to the public, have been a popular tourist attraction since the 1800s and are known as South Africa’s oldest tourist destination. Tours range from easy walks through large, impressive halls to more adventurous routes involving climbing and crawling through narrow passages.

The formations inside have evocative names like Cleopatra’s Needle and the Leaning Tower of Pisa, highlighting their unique and striking natural beauty. The site also holds archaeological and cultural significance, underscoring its reputation as both a natural wonder and a historic landmark.
