Castillo de Queyras
Château-Ville-Vieille, France
The Castillo de Queyras, also known as Fort Queyras, is a historic fortress perched on a rocky peak above the Guil River in Château-Ville-Vieille, France.
Its origins date back to the 11th or 12th century and it was built to protect the alpine valley from invaders. Over the centuries, the fortress evolved from a medieval castle into a more complex fortification, especially under the direction of the famous military engineer Vauban in the late 17th century, who fortified it with bastions, moats, and artillery positions. The fort functioned as a military stronghold and administrative center, serving roles such as tax collection, imprisonment, and troop command.
It saw significant military action during the Wars of Religion and other regional conflicts but surrendered only once in 1587. Disarmed during World War II, it was eventually preserved as a historic monument and today offers visitors a glimpse into its rich military past through its walls, barracks, and defensive structures.
It also hosts cultural events and has been featured in films, making it a well-preserved symbol of alpine history and heritage.
