Verified Castle Beauvoorde

Veurne, Belgium, Belgium

Beauvoorde Castle, known in Dutch as Kasteel Beauvoorde, is a historic water castle in the village of Wulveringem, which since 1977 forms part of the municipality of Veurne in West Flanders, Belgium.

The site probably originated in the 12th century, but the first clearly identified owner dates from 1408, and the present building is essentially a 17th‑century water castle set in a large, carefully laid‑out park, surrounded by moats and ponds that give it a distinctly romantic, secluded character.

In the late 19th century the eccentric nobleman Arthur Merghelynck bought the ruined castle, restored it between about 1875 and 1890 in a faithful 17th‑century style, and filled it with period furniture, gilt‑leather wall coverings, paintings, armor, and other antiques, creating what is now described as one of the most romantic castles in Flanders and a unique “time capsule” of aristocratic life.

Today Beauvoorde is a museum and historic site open to visitors during seasonal periods and on special occasions, with guided access to the salons, galleries, and park, and it is regarded as one of the best‑preserved and most atmospheric castle‑museums in the Westhoek region near the French border.
