Verified Castle Dessener

Hasselt, Belgium, Belgium

Castle Dessener, also called Kasteel Dessener or Kasteelhoeve Dessener, is a historic castle and manor farm in Wintershoven, a village near Hasselt in the Belgian province of Limburg, situated in the peaceful valley of the Mombeek river among fields and forests.

The site originated in the 13th century as a fortified holding belonging to the knights of Desseneer, and it was a fief of Brusthem and an arrière‑fief of the County of Loon, repeatedly besieged and taken during the conflicts of the region before passing into other hands in the 15th century.

The present castle complex mainly dates from 1639, when it was rebuilt by Willem van Lamboy, a field marshal in the service of the Holy Roman Empire, and consists of a robust two‑storey brick gatehouse as the core, flanked by two detached round towers, together forming a compact but imposing ensemble that blends medieval defensive elements with early‑modern residential architecture.

Over time the original fortifications were softened and the site evolved into a castle farm, with courtyards and agricultural buildings that today still form an integrated whole, and the name “Kasteelhoeve Dessener” reflects this mixed character of noble residence and working farm.
