The Castle of Antimachia is a striking medieval fortress located on the island of Kos in the Dodecanese.

Built by the Knights Hospitaller during the 14th century on a hilltop with wide views of the Aegean Sea, it was designed to protect the island and control important sea routes. The castle played a key defensive role and became famous for successfully resisting a major Ottoman siege in 1457, when a small force of knights and local residents defended it against a much larger attacking army.

The fortress was later strengthened and repaired after an earthquake in 1493. Today, the impressive outer walls remain well preserved, while the interior contains the ruins of an old settlement, cisterns, and two historic churches. The castle is one of Kos’s most important medieval landmarks and offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the island’s military and cultural history.
