Castle of Argos (Larisa)
Greece, Greece
The Castle of Argos, also known as Larisa Castle, stands on a rocky hill overlooking the city of Argos in the Peloponnese and is one of Greece’s most historic fortification sites.
The location served as the acropolis of ancient Argos and was continuously fortified and occupied for nearly two thousand years, with traces of defenses dating back to Mycenaean times. The castle seen today is mainly the result of Byzantine, Frankish, Venetian, and Ottoman construction and rebuilding.
Over the centuries, it changed hands many times and played an important role in regional conflicts, including the Fourth Crusade, the Ottoman-Venetian wars, and the Greek War of Independence. Visitors can still see impressive walls, towers, bastions, and sections of much older ancient fortifications incorporated into the later medieval structure.
Its elevated position provided a strategic military advantage and offers stunning views across the Argolid plain and toward Nafplio. Today, Larisa Castle is a major historical landmark that showcases the many civilizations that shaped Argos and reflects the city’s long and fascinating history from antiquity through the medieval era.
