Verified Castle of Duras

Sint-Truiden, Belgium, Belgium

The Castle of Duras (Château de Duras) is a neoclassical country house and estate in the hamlet of Duras, about a half‑hour walk north of Sint‑Truiden in Belgian Limburg, built on the site of a much older medieval stronghold of the Counts of Duras.

The original castle was created in 1102 by Otto of Looz, count of Duras, who adopted the Duras name and coat of arms through his marriage to the heiress of the earlier counts and ordered a new castle to be built, marking the start of a powerful local lordship that played a role in the politics of the County of Loon and the wider region.

The present château, designed by architect Ghislain‑Joseph Henry, was constructed between 1787 and 1789 by Baron Jean‑Joseph van der Noot and his wife Florence de Ruyssche, replacing the medieval watercastle with a sober, symmetrical building in the Classical style that reflects the tastes of the late‑18th century rather than the fortified character of its predecessor.

The estate today covers more than 300 hectares of woods, meadows, fields and orchards, including an enclosed garden, a vineyard that produces its own wine called Gloire de Duras, a watermill and farm buildings, and the whole domain is protected as a heritage monument.
