Castle of Good Hope
Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa
The Castle of Good Hope is Cape Town’s oldest surviving colonial building and South Africa’s most important historical fortress, built by the Dutch East India Company between 1666 and 1679 as a pentagonal star-shaped stronghold to protect its vital maritime replenishment station on the Spice Route. Located in the city center near Table Bay, it served for centuries as the center of Cape Town’s civilian, political, and military life, housing everything from workshops and a bakery to a church and prison cells, and today it remains the headquarters of the South African military in the Western Cape and home to the Cape Town Highlanders Regiment. Visitors can explore the well-preserved 17th-century architecture, stroll through its central lawn, climb the five bastions for panoramic views, and visit the Castle Military Museum showcasing battles and wars, the William Fehr Collection of period paintings and antique Cape furniture, plus a replica of the original forge and haunting dungeon. Daily tours include the ceremonial Key Ceremony, which reenacts the unlocking of the fortress and firing of the signal cannon, while the site’s declaration as a national monument in 1936 and status as the best-preserved 17th-century structure in the world underscore its enduring cultural and heritage significance.
