Verified Castle of Gors

Belgium, Belgium

Gors Castle (Kasteel van Gors) is a historic country house in Gors‑Opleeuw, a village in the municipality of Borgloon in Belgian Limburg, situated in a quiet, green landscape and originally built for the local nobility known as the Lords of Gorsleeuw.

The first known inhabitant was Godefridi van Leeuw in the 13th century, and over the following centuries the estate passed through the Van Leeuw, Van Gelinden, Van den Bosch, Van Bodbergen and, most significantly, the De Copis families, who held it from 1701 until the late 19th century and shaped much of its present form and park.

The original medieval site was a moated U‑shaped residence, and the surviving core of the house dates from the 17th century as a Mosan‑ Renaissance brick building surrounded on three sides by water channels, creating a typical manorial complex with a courtyard, moats and a farm.

In around 1820 Baron De Copis commissioned a major renovation that transformed the building into a Neo‑Classical ensemble, added a new principal south façade, altered the water defences by filling parts of the moat and turning others into a pond, and redesigned the side wings and the landscaping, giving the castle its elegant late‑18th/early‑19th‑century appearance.
