Castle of Kortenbos in Sint-Truiden (specifically in the hamlet of Kortenbos, between the villages of Kortenbos and Melveren) is a historic estate that is often described as a castle but is more accurately a large, enclosed manorial farm or “hof” rather than a medieval fortified castle.

The name Kortenbos originally evolved from an older estate called “Nachtegal” (or “Nachtegael”), and the site gradually became known as Kortenbos, with the manorial farm passing through several noble families over the centuries. In its current form, the building is a substantial, castle-like structure that resembles a private residence with a central block and wings, enclosed by a moat and a low wall, and is situated in a park-like setting near the famous pilgrimage basilica of Our Lady of Kortenbos, one of the most important religious and cultural landmarks in the area.

The castle grounds are tied to the local religious heritage, as the basilica itself was built in 1644 after a miraculous statue of Our Lady appeared in 1636, and the area has been a pilgrimage site for centuries, with the castle estate standing among the nearby historic buildings and farms that form the core of Kortenbos village. 

Today, the Castle of Kortenbos is primarily a private historic property and does not function as a public museum, though it is recognized as part of the cultural and architectural heritage of Sint-Truiden and can be seen from nearby public roads and walking paths, especially in combination with visits to the basilica and the surrounding quiet, rural landscape of the Dry Haspengouw region.
