The Castle of Lamia, also known as Akrolamia, stands on a rocky hill above the city of Lamia and has been a key defensive site since ancient times.

Archaeological evidence shows the hill was inhabited from the Bronze Age, and the first fortifications date back to the Classical period, making it one of the city’s most important historical landmarks. Over the centuries, the fortress was expanded and repaired by Byzantines, Franks, Catalans, and Ottomans, reflecting the region’s complex history.

Its strategic position overlooking the Spercheios Valley and routes into Thessaly made it an important military stronghold for many different rulers. Much of the castle’s walls, towers, and bastions remain preserved today, showcasing layers of construction from different historical periods. The site offers impressive views of the surrounding mountains, plains, and the Maliakos Gulf.

The castle also houses the Archaeological Museum of Lamia, which displays artifacts from prehistoric, Classical, and later eras, making Akrolamia both a major historical monument and a cultural center for the region.
