The Castle of Monolithos is a dramatic medieval fortress located on the island of Rhodes, Greece, perched atop a steep, isolated rock overlooking the Aegean Sea.

Built in 1476 by the Knights of Saint John, it was designed to protect the island from pirate raids and Ottoman attacks while providing a strategic lookout over important sea routes. The castle’s remarkable position made it extremely difficult to capture, and historical accounts state that it was never conquered by force.

Although much of the fortress is now in ruins, parts of its walls, old water cisterns, and a small white chapel dedicated to Saint Panteleimon still remain. Visitors reach the site by climbing a stone staircase cut into the rock, where they are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of the sea, coastline, and nearby islands. The castle’s combination of history, natural beauty, and breathtaking scenery makes it one of Rhodes’s most memorable landmarks.
