The Castle of Mytilene is a vast fortress overlooking the city and harbor of Mytilene on the island of Lesbos.

Originally established during the Byzantine era, possibly in the 6th century under Emperor Justinian I, it was later expanded and strengthened by the Genoese Gattilusio family and the Ottoman Empire, making it one of the largest castles in the Mediterranean. Built on the site of an ancient acropolis, the castle served for centuries as a key military, administrative, and residential center.

Its walls, towers, gates, mosques, cisterns, and other structures reflect the many civilizations that controlled Lesbos throughout its history. Today, the Castle of Mytilene is one of the island’s most important historical attractions.
