Verified Castle of Wimmertingen

Hasselt, Belgium, Belgium

Castle of Wimmertingen, also called Kasteel de Grady, is a neoclassical manor castle in the village of Wimmertingen, a southern part‑community of Hasselt in the Belgian province of Limburg, located at Luikersteenweg 741.

Its origins go back to the early 18th century as a square manor farm, but in 1829 Baron Julien de Cecil, the first mayor of Hasselt after Belgian independence, bought the property and from about 1849 transformed it into a small classicist castle with a two‑storey main block, a lower wing with a corner tower, and a landscaped park that developed in the late 19th century.

The main building, whose core dates from the second half of the 18th century, is in brick with limestone and slate details, and inside it preserves a Renaissance fireplace from 1667 that originally came from the old farm, while the 20th‑century additions and later interiors give the castle a refined, residential character rather than a fortified one.

The estate remained in the hands of the de Cecil and de Grady de la Neuville families for well over a century, with several members of the de Grady family serving as mayors of Wimmertingen, and after the death of the last owner Inès de Grady de la Neuville in 1998 the castle was sold and today functions partly as a bed‑and‑breakfast and event venue, closed to general visits but still a prominent local landmark in the quiet, agricultural landscape of southern Hasselt.
