Castle Sombreffe
Sombreffe, Belgium, Belgium
Castle Sombreffe in Sombreffe, Belgium, is a medieval castle located in the province of Namur, Wallonia, whose origins date back to the 13th century when it was built as a simple keep for the Lords of Orbais.
It started life as a border fortress guarding part of the Duchy of Brabant’s defensive line and later grew into a ring‑shaped fortified complex with curtain walls and several towers. Over the centuries it passed through many noble families, saw parts damaged by fire, and was later converted into an agricultural estate before being restored and repurposed in the late 20th century.
Today the castle is recognised as major Wallonian heritage, still privately owned, and used mainly as a venue for events, weddings, and hospitality while preserving its distinctive medieval layout and historic towers.
