Castle Vierves-sur-Viroin, also known as the Castle of the Counts of Hamal, is a prominent medieval fortress and later classical residence in the village of Vierves-sur-Viroin, part of the municipality of Viroinval in the province of Namur, Belgium.

The castle sits on a rocky spur overlooking the valley of the Viroin river and is surrounded by the village, which is grouped around it and recognized as one of Belgium’s “Plus Beaux Villages de Wallonie”. Its oldest surviving parts date from the 14th century, and the castle originally functioned as a feudal stronghold and military bastion with defensive walls and towers, playing an important strategic role until the 17th century.

A major fire in the 18th century (around 1762, with some sources citing 1775) destroyed much of the medieval structure, and the castle was rebuilt and largely remodelled into its current appearance, dominated by a classical style with large windows, symmetrical façades, and a reduced but still visible defensive base.

The Counts of Hamal, who owned the castle from 1567 to 1852, were responsible for radically restructuring the fortress and medieval farm, limiting its military character and turning it into a more elegant pleasure residence, while the 19th century brought further changes such as the creation of a large terrace joining the two courtyards and expansive gardens and orchards extending beyond the walls.
