The Cathedral-Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in León, Nicaragua, is the largest cathedral in Central America and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Constructed between 1747 and 1814, it was designed by Guatemalan architect Diego José de Porres Esquivel and reflects an eclectic style combining Baroque and Neoclassical elements with Gothic, Renaissance, and Mudéjar influences. The cathedral’s robust volcanic stone façade and twin 40-meter towers were built to withstand earthquakes and volcanic activity common in the region.

Inside, the cathedral features a spacious nave with high vaulted ceilings, a gold-coated wooden main altar dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and an abundance of natural light filtering through its distinctive white domes. Its architectural and spiritual significance, along with its harmony with the surrounding mountain landscape, make it a central landmark of León and an outstanding example of colonial religious architecture in Latin America.
