Verified Château Beauregard

Thuin, Belgium, Belgium

Château Beauregard in Thuin, Belgium, is a historic neo‑classical estate set on former medieval lands that have been associated with various noble families since the 15th century.

The main château was commissioned in 1795 by Hippolyte Marescaille de Courcelles and built by the Tournai architect Antoine Payen‑le‑Vieux; it is a two‑storey rectangular manor with a central rectangular corps de logis and a péristyle (columned porch) linking two forward‑projecting wings, and in 1841 a third storey of the same style was added, raising the building’s height.

The estate is approached through a long avenue of tilleul (lime) trees and lies beside a historic water mill, ponds, and a terraced balustraded forecourt, all set within an English‑style park with prairies planted with Chinese ginkgo trees, weeping willows and purple beeches. The whole complex—château, park, church, avenue, old mill, ponds and surrounding grounds—was classified as a heritage site on 4 November 1976, protecting it as an important example of 18th‑ and 19th‑century aristocratic architecture and landscape in the Thuin area.

Today the château and its grounds are used as part of a local tourist and cultural centre rather than as a private residence, making it a accessible example of Thuin’s broader castle and heritage landscape alongside sites such as the nearby Thuin Castle and the town’s historic ramparts and bell towers.
