Verified Château Bivort

Fontaine-l'Évêque, Belgium, Belgium

The Château Bivort, also known as the Château de Fontaine‑l’Évêque, is a historic castle in the town of Fontaine‑l’Évêque, in the province of Hainaut, Wallonia, Belgium, originally founded in the 13th century by Nicolas de Fontaine on the border between the historic territories of Hainaut and Liège.

The estate was inherited by the Hennin‑Liétard family and later passed through several noble houses such as the Hamals, Herzelles and Rodoans, and after serious damage around 1554 it was largely rebuilt while still preserving parts of its 13th‑century enclosure and a Gothic chapel. In the 17th and 18th centuries the castle was restored and refined: the Rodoan family added the current main gate and chapel façade, and the residential wings dating from the 16th and 17th centuries were extended in the early 18th century, but by the end of that century the domain was in ruins.

The castle was acquired in 1864 by Clément Bivort de la Saudée, who completed the residential wing and initiated a major restoration in 1869 under the architect Auguste Cador, giving the building a more coherent appearance with hints of a neo‑medieval style, which was later refined and simplified in 1954 by the architect Simon Brigode. Today the Château Bivort is owned by the municipality of Fontaine‑l’Évêque and houses the town’s administrative offices, while its architecture still shows the mixture of medieval core, Early Modern wings, and 19th‑century restoration, and it stands as a central emblem of the town’s identity in the Pays des Lacs area.
