Chateau Brunsode - Château de Tilff
Esneux, Belgium, Belgium
Château Brunsode, more commonly known as Château de Tilff, is a historic manor‑castle in the village of Tilff, part of the municipality of Esneux in Liège Province, Wallonia, Belgium, located on the road between Tilff and the hamlet of Les Sarts.
It is first mentioned in the late 13th century under the name of Willelmo de Brunsode, a canon of Saint‑Lambert in Liège, and the site originally featured a fortified house whose square tower and moats already existed in 1294, before the present building was erected. The château itself is a massive 17th‑century structure in Louis XIII style, built on the foundations of that earlier stronghouse, with notable features such as a square tower, remaining moats and a ceremonial main building that was later adapted into a more pleasure‑oriented residence.
The estate has belonged to different owners over the centuries, including the du Moulin family in the 18th century, and later became communal property in 1972 before being restored in the 1990s, after which it was open to the municipality’s cultural and event activities.
Today the main building serves as a large events hall and reception venue for the commune, while the surrounding farm buildings and former barns have been converted into cultural spaces: the orangery hosts the “Ateliers créatifs” (creative workshops), and the restored barn contains the Musée de l’Abeille (Bee Museum), a small natural‑history museum dedicated to bees and apiculture that has been open since 1974 and attracts many school groups and visitors.
