Château Cortils
Blegny, Belgium, Belgium
The Château de Cortils is a historic manor and guesthouse in the hamlet of Cortils, in the village of Mortier within the Belgian municipality of Blegny, province of Liège, situated in the valley of the Ruisseau de Loneu near Saint-André.
The main building, dating from around 1700, is a four-storey brick structure with a high roof and a notably tall chimney, decorated with tufa-stone window frames, corner bands and horizontal stone bands that mark the floor levels, while the first floor and part of the second are built in natural stone blocks.
The estate forms an important architectural and landscape complex: behind the main building there is a terrace, to the right a chapel, to the left a square tower, and to the front an 1853 carriage porch that opens onto the inner courtyard of the linked castle farm, with three farm buildings partly from the 18th and 19th centuries grouped around it.
To the south of the château are ornamental gardens with pavilions, glasshouses and other decorative structures, and to the east a small pond, all set within a large, tranquil, nature-rich estate that has existed since at least the Carolingian period (mentioned in 941) and today covers about 76 hectares of pastures, forests and gardens.
